Torquay defender Guy Branston has said the strong bond among the players is behind their lofty league position.
The Gulls visit Rotherham in their last match of the season on Saturday knowing a win will secure a play-off place.
Branston told BBC Spotlight: "You don't get this far unless you've got that team spirit.
"It's now about who's got that desire, who's got that final push and who's got that group mentality, which I think we have, to get in the play-offs."
Torquay go into the final round of fixtures sixth in League Two, level on points with Stevenage and Gillingham, who are seventh and eighth.
"The lads are just so close to it that it's frightening - it's exciting times," said Branston.
"We like being there and we liked pushing for automatic promotion, but we'll be pushing until the last minute now."
Branston has been one of Torquay's standout performers over the course of the season, gaining a spot in the Professional Footballers' Association League Two team of the year, and being named player of the season by supporters.
He added: "If we can win on Saturday we've got three weeks of hard work aiming for Old Trafford - and what a great day that will be if we can get there."
