Bolton midfielder Mark Davies has been ruled out for the final two matches of the season after undergoing surgery on a persistent ankle problem.

The 23-year-old, who has made only two substitute appearances in the last two months, had an operation on Thursday.

"We tried some steroid injections but they've not worked so I felt it was important we addressed it now," said Trotters boss Owen Coyle.

"By doing that we'll have him fit and available for the start of pre-season."

Davies picked up the injury in the FA Cup quarter-final win over Birmingham on 12 March and has since struggled with bone fragments floating in the joint.

Coyle has previously seen midfielder Stuart Holden and full-back Sam Ricketts' seasons brought to early ends by knee and Achilles tendon injuries respectively.

Ninth-place Bolton have little riding on their remaining two Premier League games - away to Blackpool and at home to Manchester City - with a European place out of reach and survival guaranteed.
