Colchester United have signed Swindon Town left-back Michael Rose on a two-year contract.

The 28-year-old joins the U's on a free transfer after the Robins agreed to terminate the last year of his deal.

Since arriving from Stockport last summer Rose has made 33 starts for Swindon, scoring three goals.

"Michael is a very experienced player who has played at a number of different levels," U's boss John Ward told the club website.external-link

"He is left sided and can play either left-back or one in front and gives us balance on that side of the team, as well as another threat from set pieces.

"He will bring competition for places to the back four and with Ben Coker also able to play either position down the left it means we have some potential variation available to us."

Rose becomes the first player to leave the County Ground following Swindon's .

The Manchester United academy product has had spells at Chester, Yeovil and Hereford and played 12 times while on loan at Norwich City last term.
