New Oxford United centre-back Ryan James is hoping to use the pre-season trip to USA to cement a place in the starting line-up.

The 21-year-old signed for Oxford last Friday and will join the squad for their trip to America in July.

"I'm really looking forward to that and from there I want to get going straight away," James told BBC Oxford.

"I want to try and get a place in the team and see what I can bring and then try and get offered something else."

James has joined the U's on a six-month deal having previously been at Grays Athletic, who were then in the Blue Square Bet Premier, and also the QPR and Millwall youth academies.

The former attacking midfielder has spent the last two seasons at the Nike Academy, which helps young players join professional clubs, and it was here that James learnt his craft as a defender.

"At Millwall I was playing as a left-winger and I'd been looking for a position to cement," he added

"I'd been in and amongst centre midfield and forward and I started playing centre-back for Nike and I really enjoyed it.

"I started to push on and the last two seasons I've been playing there.

"These days football is so competitive, so any help you can get you've got to take it."
