Barnsley have made Rochdale manager Keith Hill their preferred choice to succeed the departed Mark Robins, BBC Radio Sheffield reports.

Hill guided Rochdale into League One last season, their first promotion in 41 years.

But Dale chief executive Colin Garlick told the club's websiteexternal-link: "There's been no approach from Barnsley, Sheffield United or any other club.

"Keith and I have been working together as normal making plans for pre-season."

Former Blackburn, Plymouth and Rochdale defender Hill has won plaudits for Rochdale's passing style of play in his first managerial post.

In January, Hill was linked to the Crystal Palace manager's position following the dismissal of George Burley.

Robins surprisingly left Barnsley last week following a disagreement about the club's playing budget.

Barnsley intend to begin interviewing candidates next week.
