Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar could miss the start of next season after undergoing knee surgery.

The 29-year-old Spaniard has had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and will be out of action for up to three months.

Cuellar had postponed the operation because of injuries to Richard Dunne and James Collins.

He has slipped down the pecking order at Villa Park this season, making only 12 Premier League starts.

His last Villa start came in the 1-0 defeat by Wolves in March, while his last appearance was as a substitute in the victory over Newcastle last month.

Cuellar has been linked with a move back to Spain with either Villarreal or Espanyol but has expressed his wish to remain with Villa, while caretaker boss Gary McAllister said the defender still has a role to play at the club.
