Derby County's Shaun Barker 'fit for next season'

Derby County defender Shaun Barker says he will be fully fit next season after undergoing surgery on a knee problem.

The 28-year-old, who only missed three games last season but had to sit out a large amount of training sessions, had an operation in April.

Barker told the club's website: "It was never a problem playing games or playing them in quick succession, it was the training where it hit me most.

"I can't wait to get back to full fitness now I have had the operation."

The defender made 45 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring one goal, as the Rams finished 19th in the Championship, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Barker admits that missed training sessions had an impact on his overall fitness.

"Painkillers got me through most games but my training was stopped pretty much," he added.

"Fitness-wise I was nowhere near where I could or should have been for a player who was playing week-in, week-out."
