Manuel Jose, the coach of Cairo giants Al Ahly, has emerged as a contender to take over Egypt's national team.
The Pharaohs are the reigning African champions but are almost certain not to qualify for next year's Nations Cup.
Former boss Hassan Shehata resigned after Egypt's recent 0-0 draw with South Africa in Cairo, which left them bottom of Group G.
Assistant coach Shawki Gharib is expected to take over for the remainder of the 2012 qualifers.
No agreement has yet been reached between the Egypt Football Association and Al Ahly - and Jose is keen to make sure any transition is amicable.
The Portuguese coach has led Al Ahly to huge success domestically and in continental football and knows many of the current team well.
He has previously expressed an interest in taking on the job of Egypt coach and is thought to be keen to try to take them to the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
