Kettering Town manager Morell Maison is casting his eye over multiple trialists as he looks to bolster a squad with just five players under contract.
Moses Ashikodi, Adam Cunnington, JP Marna, Luke Graham and Sol Davis have deals for next season.
Maison told BBC Radio Northampton: "We've had 41 trialists and that's been cut down to 16 or 17.
"Some have League or Conference pedigree - competitive matches will give me an idea of who is good enough."
Last season's Supporters Player of the Season Marcus Kelly, and utility player Pat Noubissie, are out-of-contract but are training with the Poppies.
Kettering Town travel to Rugby on Saturday 9 August in their first pre-season friendly, and host Notts County on Wednesday 13 August.
"Three or four of [the trialists] I already know and we'll unveil them against Notts County," Maison said.
"It's a very hectic time but it's early days and we have another four weeks."
Striker Ashikodi was ruled out with a knee injury that required surgery and lengthy rehabilitation last season.
But Maison said he was now well and raring to go.
"Moses is fit and he's responded well in training. He's working very hard and he's absolutely determined to have a good season."
