Notts County defender Stephen Hunt may need further surgery on his ankle after spending two nights in hospital.
Hunt went under the knife at the end of last season and is hoping antibiotics will cure a painful infection.
The 26-year-old picked up the injury on his return from a loan spell at Lincoln City.
Magpies manager Martin Allen told the club's website that Hunt will discover whether he requires the surgery before the club's pre-season tour next week.
There is further good news for the Magpies boss with Lee Hughes and Neal Bishop on the road to recovery.
Bishop underwent an operation to solve a hernia problem he had been carrying for much of last season.
Allen said: "Neal Bishop has done a week of strength and conditioning of his groin area and we are hoping he will start training with us on Monday."
Hughes has been suffering from sinus-related headaches.
"I have been assured by the consultant that this is nothing serious and he will be returning to training on Monday," Allen added.
