Kightly wants to prove he is worth a longer term contract with Wolves

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Michael Kightly has signed a one-year contract extension with the Premier League club.

The 25-year-old has been restricted to only 13 Premier League appearances in the past two seasons due to ankle and knee injuries.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said: "He's had some tough times over the last couple of years and has had to work really hard."

Kightly joined Wolves in 2006 from non-league Grays Athletic.

His contract at Molineux was due to expire at the end of the coming season, but Kightly says the extra 12 months will give him the chance to prove to McCarthy he is worth a longer deal.

He told the club's official websiteexternal-link: "It is nice that the club came to me and asked me to sign another year. Hopefully I can now get back out and prove my fitness and prove myself again as the same player I was two years ago.

"If that happens then there may well be the chance to commit my future to the club further, and I'd be delighted to do that.

"I understand that, after the last couple of years I've had, I wouldn't be offered another long-term contract.

"At the same time, though, I'm not the sort of person who would want to walk away on a free as some other players might do. I think this deal is good for all of us."

Kightly has scored 22 goals in 106 appearances for Wolves, but sustained an ankle injury against Birmingham in November 2009. He then had a knee tendon injury that required surgery in Sweden.

He returned to the first team at the end of last season, and McCarthy is pleased to have him fully fit for the new campaign.

"He arrived during my first season and made a key contribution in the team winning the Championship title and getting into the Premier League," he added.

"It is great news that he's signed a new contract to extend his stay with us, and I know how keen he is to go out and show what he can do again this season."

Wolves begin their Premier League season away at Blackburn on 13 August.
