Colchester United goalkeeper Ben Williams has been released from hospital after suffering from a severe viral infection.
The U's keeper became ill on the League One side's pre-season tour of the Netherlands and had been in hospital in his native north-west.
"The illness has taken a lot out of him, with nine or 10 days in hospital," boss John Ward told the club website.
"It was pretty severe for him, and was worse than we imagined really."
He added: "We're very hopeful we will get Ben back in the football club on Wednesday or Thursday."
The former Carlisle shot-stopper could miss the start of the upcoming campaign, something he endured last year when an ankle injury forced him to sit out the first two months of the season.
The U's have cover for Williams in the form of Mark Cousins and Carl Pentney.
