Reading have signed Tottenham Hotspur defender Bongani Khumalo on a season-long loan deal.

The 24-year-old played in each of South Africa's World Cup matches in 2010 but has not started for the Premier League side since his arrival in January.

Khumalo did however feature for Preston during a loan spell last season, notching up six Championship starts.

"The manager was very ambitious with his plans for the season ahead, there was only ever one option," he said.

"It's an unbelievable set-up at Reading and I just got a great feeling from the club after playing here for Preston at the end of last season."

Royals boss Brian McDermott added: "Bongani is a player we know well. He played against us for Spurs' reserves and also while on loan at Preston towards the end of last season, before he unfortunately picked up a metatarsal injury.

"We are delighted to have him with us."

Spurs have the option to recall the centre-back during the January transfer window.
