Carlisle director of football Dennis Booth says the club's 2-0 victory against Middlesbrough on Tuesday is evidence of progress this summer.

The Cumbrians made it two wins on the bounce against Championship opposition after Saturday's 1-0 success against Doncaster Rovers.

"We've worked on the system," Booth told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"At the moment we're seeing the rewards, we couldn't have prepared for the season any better."

Booth added: "The players are fully aware of what is expected with them and a lot of work from the coaching staff has gone into making sure they know how they play."

Meanwhile Booth has backed striker Paddy Madden to continue to progress at Brunton Park this season.

The 21-year-old Irishman is yet to score this pre-season, in contrast to fellow forwards Craig Curran, Rory Loy and Francois Zoko who have all opened their account.

"Paddy has spent time with us, he's come from Ireland and it's a big step up, it's difficult as he's playing against better players," Booth continued.

"He's starting to show a little and he's one for the future - but he was unlucky tonight.

"It won't be too long until he puts the ball into the net if he keeps working as he does on the training ground and is taking things on board. He's a learner and we're pleased we've got him."
