Oxford United boss Chris Wilder says he has been impressed by defender-midfielder Ryan James.

The 21-year-old, a summer signing from the Nike Academy, scored in Tuesday's 2-0 friendly win over Birmingham City.external-link

Wilder told BBC Oxford: "We think he's got something about him. He's desperate to get on the pitch and everyone was made up that he scored.

"He's had a few knocks in his career but I've got no problems in giving lads a second opportunity."

James was at the QPR and Millwall youth academies but his only experience of playing first-team football in England was with Grays in 2009.

He has signed a six-month deal with the U's and Wilder said: "He's shown that he knows it's his last chance and he's grabbing his opportunity."

And the Oxford manager was happy with the win over their Championship opponents.

"Wins breed confidence and players can see how to see out games. We did that well," he added.
