Medy Elito scored on his debut as Dagenham & Redbridge started life back in League Two by beating Macclesfield.
The midfielder slotted home from close range on the hour mark.
That sparked the game into life and Daggers defender Scott Doe headed just wide and then forced a good save from Jose Veiga with another headed effort.
Visiting keeper Chris Lewington denied Emile Sinclair and then kept out Ben Tomlinson, before being sent off two minutes later for handball.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Macclesfield Town manager Gary Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"I think the Wade Fairhurst tackle was a cynical challenge on him and it changed the pattern of the game.
"After 45 minutes I quite fancied it and I thought we had too much for them, and on another day we might have had two or three goals.
"We've got one or two people that I think can play, so we're trying to play to that but you don't get any points for hard lines and we were a bit unlucky today."
