Michael Chopra scored two goals on his Ipswich debut to help his new club past Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Chopra opened his account on 13 minutes, racing onto a ball over the top from Mark Kennedy and lobbing the ball over David James.
After Nicky Maynard was denied for offside, Lee Martin fired low across James from 20 yards.
On 60 minutes, James tried to dink over Chopra but was caught out by the striker, who simply sent the ball home.
City's 3-0 home defeat to Millwall on the first weekend of last season was quickly followed by the resignation of manager Steve Coppell.
This year it was the turn of Keith Millen, assistant to Coppell a year ago, to experience the boos of the home faithful in August.
