Sheff Wed 2-0 Rochdale

Sheffield Wednesday got their League One campaign off to a flying start by defeating Rochdale at Hillsborough.

Captain Rob Jones headed in a Julian Bennett long throw to give Wednesday an early advantage.

Rochdale then hit the woodwork when Ashley Grimes' curling shot hit the far post before Gary Madine headed against the bar for the home team.

The lead was doubled when a Chris Sedgewick corner fell to David Prutton to fire in from the edge of the area.

VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM

Sheffield Wednesday boss Gary Megson told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"I'm satisfied and there were a lot of good things there.

"You want to score your first goal, your first win and your first clean sheet, so it's very pleasing.

"What we're trying to get to the players is we need to score and cause the opposition problems in more then one way."

Rochdale manager Steve Eyre told BBC Radio Manchester:

"Unfortunately at the end of our good spell they scored from a long throw, we learnt from it after, but a goal was done and it was tough.

"Nobody is upset, we've just got to regroup and take lots of positives out of today and hopefully we can take that out on someone else.

"I wasn't fazed by any of it, but at the same time it's not about me, but I certainly enjoyed it."
