Egypt secured a surprising 1-1 draw against four-time champions Brazil in their opening Group E match at the Under-20 World Cup in Colombia.
The South Americans dominated the early exchanges and opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Danilo on Friday.
But the Young Pharaohs responded 14 minutes later when Omar Gaber equalised with a header.
He powerfully headed home from a corner after Danilo failed to clear at the first attempt.
Egypt were sharper in attack and tougher in defence as they thwarted Brazil's swift counter-attacks.
They now share a point each from the group - same as Austria and Panama, who drew 0-0 earlier in the day.
Gaber could have given Egypt at 2-1 lead in the 48th minute but despite taking his time and being alone in the box he shot just wide.
The Young Pharaohs will play Panama in their next game on Monday while Brazil take on Austria on the same day.
Other African representatives at the tournament are Mali, Cameroon and Nigeria.
Mali will play South Korea on Saturday in Group A while in Group B Cameroon will square out with New Zealand.
Nigeria will open their campaign against Guatemala in Group D on Sunday.
