Northampton Town have brought their former centre-half Ashley Westwood back to the club on non-contract terms.
The 34-year-old, who played for Town between 2003 and 2006, left Kettering by mutual consent in January and had a brief spell with League Two side Crewe.
The former Manchester United trainee was initially brought back to Sixfields on a trial basis.
But a has urged boss Gary Johnson to bolster his defensive options.
Westwood only made 35 appearances during his first three-year spell at the Cobblers because of shoulder and knee injuries.
He has also represented Sheffield Wednesday, Chester, Swindon, Port Vale, Stevenage and Wrexham.
