Matt Gill has been named the new Bristol Rovers skipper with Adam Virgo appointed vice-captain for the forthcoming season.
Both midfielder Gill, 30, and defender Virgo, 28, were brought into the Memorial Stadium this summer by new boss Paul Buckle.
"The manager called me about it and I'm obviously very proud to be named captain," Gill told BBC Radio Bristol.
"It's an honour and I'm looking forward to trying to be a leader."
Gill has made 427 career appearances and counts Peterborough, Exeter, Norwich and Walsall among his former clubs.
"I was captain at Exeter for a while," he added. "I always thought that I was a leader on the pitch even if I didn't have the armband, but the manager has given me it and I'm really pleased.
"I'm looking forward to leading the boys out. We've done all the preparation we can do and we are looking forward to getting started now."
