Carlisle needed penalties to overcome Oldham and progress to the second round of the Carling Cup.
Reuben Reid gave the Latics the lead with a first-half spot-kick after Liam Noble had fouled Dean Furman.
The visitors improved as the game went on and when Alex Diamond fouled Craig Curran, Jon-Paul McGoven stepped up to fire the free-kick into the top corner.
With no further goals in extra time, it was Adam Collin who was Carlisle's hero with two vital shoot-out saves.
