Leon McKenzie has said he has failed to win a deal at Luton Town.
The 33-year-old had been on trial with the Hatters, following his release by Northampton, and featured in Saturday's 4-0 friendly win over Cambridge City.
But the striker said on social networking site Twitter: "Had a call today from the gaffer and I didn't fit the missing link for his team.
"I wish the lads, fans and staff all the best for the season, great club, hope they do it."
McKenzie, who can count Crystal Palace, Norwich and Peterborough among his former clubs, scored 10 goals in 27 games for the Cobblers last season.
Following the clash against City, Luton boss Gary Brabin told BBC Three Counties Radio: "He's had no pre-season and has had bit-parts in our last three games.
"He's joined in training a few times to see where he is with his fitness levels.
"I'm certainly on the lookout for one more player in a certain position. There's still a bit of work to do."
