New signing Martin Donnelly scored an 83rd-minute winner for Cliftonville as Carrick Rangers lost their first match in the Irish Premiership.
Former Crusaders star Donnelly tapped in at the back post after Joe Gormley shot had been deflected off Anto Lagan.
Carrick had a great chance at the start of the second half when Paul Heatley's corner was headed into the side-netting by David McAlinden.
Paul Owens then fired a shot wide for the First Division champions.
