Portsmouth's Liam Lawrence missed a penalty with the last kick of the game as Brighton held on to beat their south-coast rivals.

Brighton's record £3.25m signing Craig Mackail-Smith toed the ball over the line in first-half injury time after Jamie Ashdown saved from Ashley Barnes.

And with seconds left in the second half Lewis Dunk handled in the area.

But Lawrence's penalty hit the post and the final whistle was blown as Gus Poyet's side made it two straight wins.

One negative was the sight of Will Buckley, who scored both goals in their opening-day win over Doncaster, limping off injured in the first half.
