Celtic captain Scott Brown says he is "very close" to signing a new contract at the club.

"I hope to sign, yes," said the 26-year-old midfielder, whose current five-year deal expires at the end of this season.

"Hopefully it's just a matter of time, maybe a couple of weeks or so.

"I want to stay at this club, I enjoy this club," he continued. "The manager wants me to stay and I want to stay for the manager."

Brown joined Celtic in 2007, with the Glasgow giants paying £4.4m to take him from Scottish Premier League rivals Hibernian, a fee that remains a record between two Scottish clubs.

"I want to win the league and cups - that's why I came here," Brown added. "I have had a taste of it before and I want more."

Meanwhile, manager Neil Lennon revealed that his bid to bring in Cameroon international striker Mo Idrissou is "dead in the water".
