Hull 1-0 Reading

A superb second-half Robbie Brady strike from outside the area secured victory for Hull against Reading.

The Tigers, who had failed to score in their opening three home league and cup games, were on top early on with Aaron McLean and Brady both going close.

Adam Federici had a busy time in the Royals goal, turning Matt Fryatt's powerful right-footed effort behind.

Hull won it when Brady drilled a 25-yard shot into the net as Reading lost for the fourth time in a row.

The Royals will hope that striker Adam Le Fondre, signed from Rotherham United on Saturday, will be able to make a quick impression.

The visitors had few clear-cut chances against a solid Hull defence. The normally-reliable Ian Harte lifted a free-kick high over the crossbar midway through the first half.

Royals boss Brian McDermott, who handed Kaspars Gorkss his debut after signing him from QPR, urged his side forward and Hal Robson-Kanu responded with a fine 20-yard drive which went just wide.

But Hull deserved their goal on the balance of play and both clubs now have a two-week break before their next fixtures.
