Swansea City firmly focused, says Nathan Dyer

Dyer has spent loan spells with Burnley and Sheffield United

Winger Nathan Dyer has said Swansea will concentrate on their own performances rather than worry about Premier League rivals.

The newly promoted Welsh side are still seeking their first win of the season after Saturday's 0-0 draw at home to Wigan Athletic.

But Dyer believes victories will follow if the Swans stick to their principles.

"We just want to concentrate on ourselves and that's the way we perform better," he said.

"Going against other teams in the bottom half that everybody thinks that's going to be in a relegation zone, we don't take too much notice of that.

"We just want to keep going out there each game and perform. Eventually we will get that win.

"And when we do get that win I know we can lift ourselves and go on a little run. I think we can definitely stay up."

Brendan Rodgers' side lost 4-0 at Manchester City in their opening Premier League fixture before the goalless draw against Wigan.

But Dyer does not believe Swansea need to alter their style of play in order to win matches and to survive in the Premier League.

"We don't want to go into that and kicking the ball long," said the former Southampton player. "That's not our identity. It's not the philosophy of our game.

"We like to keep it on the ground, keep it short and show what good footballers we can be.

"We worked so hard to get here and I think we did really well.

"It's the first Premier League game at home and we wanted to put on a performance for the fans.

"Wigan had a few opportunities but I thought we had chances to put the ball away a few times and win the match."

Roberto Martinez's Latics spurned a golden opportunity to win the match in the second half when they were awarded a penalty following Ashley Williams' rash challenge on former Swan Jordi Gomez.

But goalkeeper Michel Vorm, who impressed on his debut in the defeat against Manchester City, saved Ben Watson's penalty kick.

And Dyer believes the addition of the Dutch international to Swansea's squad will prove invaluable this season.

"He's come in [and] settled in quite well. The first training session I thought he's going to be a good asset for us," he said.

"He's got great reflexes and he's taken everything in his stride.

"[He] did amazing on Monday and again saving our bacon a few times today and obviously saving the pen to keep it 0-0."
