Promoted Charlton Athletic returned to the Women's Premier League with a bang, beating last season's runners-up Nottingham Forest 4-1 in their opener.
Clare Sykes and Millie Bright struck in the last 10 minutes as Leeds United beat Watford 2-0.
Nikki Watts's goal was enough for Reading to beat promoted Coventry City.
Champions Sunderland's clash with Cardiff City, and Barnet's visit to Aston Villa, were both postponed due to international call-ups.
Charlton Athletic 4-1 Nottingham Forest
Gemma Bryan put the Addicks on the road to victory with a 10th minute penalty.
The scores were level 12 minutes later, though, when Natasha Meades fired a spectacular 30-yard drive in off the crossbar.
But the home side regained the lead in first half stoppage time, with Harley Bennett cleverly guiding home a shot from 18 yards.
Kim Dixson headed in Fliss Gibbons' 77th minute cross to put victory in sight.
And four minutes from time Kristina Manktelow forced home a loose ball to wrap up the three points.
Leeds United 2-0 Watford
Watford were dangerous throughout the match, particularly when last season's leading goalscorer Sarah Wiltshire was on the ball.
But Leeds got their noses in front when Sykes, following a foul on Tanya Rich, struck home an 80th-minute penalty.
Victory was not assured until the fifth minute of stoppage time, however, when Bright collected a Leah Galton pass before holding off three defenders to squeeze the ball in.
Reading 1-0 Coventry City
Reading had the better of the first half but had to wait until 10 minutes after the break for Watts to put them in front from a Trudy Harbison cross.
The visitors hit back hard but despite late pressure were unable to force an equaliser.
