Leaders Gateshead fought back from a goal behind to beat 10-man Southport.
The hosts scored through Tony Gray's low shot from John Kissock's pass but Chris Moore equalised with a powerful angled shot from Kris Gate's cross.
Phil Turnbull's effort from 25 yards put Gateshead in front before Southport had goalkeeper Tony McMillan sent off for fouling Yemi Odubade in the area.
Jon Shaw converted the penalty as Gateshead maintained their position at the top of the table.
