Trapattoni omits McCarthy for Republic qualifiers

Wigan's James McCarthy has been left out of the Republic of Ireland 25-man squad for next month's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Slovakia and Russia.

McCarthy pulled out of May's Nations Cup games and a Euro 2012 qualifier against Macedonia amid conflicting reports over an ankle injury.

The Wigan man was then named in the squad for the friendly against Croatia before withdrawing because of injury.

Seamus Coleman and Paul McShane are ruled out of the qualifiers by injury.

Stoke pair Marc Wilson and Jonathan Walters are omitted after being named in the initial squad for the Croatia friendly.

Wilson and Walters linked up with the Republic squad before the Croatia friendly but were then sent back to their clubs after being judged not to be match fit.

As was the case with McCarthy, Republic manager Giovanni Trapattoni was unhappy at the failure of Wilson and Walters to make themselves available for the Nations Cup games in May and the qualifier against Macedonia.

Ipswich defender Damien Delaney and Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark also drop out of the 32-man squad named for the game against Croatia.

An FAI statement said that McCarthy "has been made available for selection for the Under-21 squad, but like other players, will be called up to the senior squad should he be required".

McCarthy has started both of Wigan's Premier League games so far this season and signed a new five-year deal with the club earlier this week.

"Picking the final 25 players for the squad has not been an easy task, and unfortunately some players have been left out," said Trapattoni.

"We will continue to monitor their progress with their clubs, and call them up if necessary."

The Republic's Under-21 team face Hungary in Sligo on 1 September - the day before the Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovakia at the Aviva Stadium.

Trapattoni's side will then travel to Moscow for the 6 September clash against Russia.
