Bristol City say Liam Fontaine's Southampton move is off

Bristol City defender Liam Fontaine's proposed move to Championship rivals Southampton has fallen through.

Fontaine had been on the verge of moving to St Mary's but the centre-half will now not be joining the Saints.

The 25-year-old who started his career as a trainee at Fulham has previously had issues with a troublesome ankle, which has been operated on twice.

A Bristol City club spokesman said: "Liam remains a City player and is very much a part of our squad."

Fontaine first joined the club on loan from Fulham in January 2006 and earned a permanent deal six months later.

He has since made 204 appearances and still has a year left to run on his current contract.

Fontaine has only made one appearance for City so far this season because of his ankle injury.
