Torquay boss Martin Ling concerned by Rene Howe injury

Torquay United striker Rene Howe could face a period on the sidelines after limping out of Tuesday's 2-1 Johnstone Paints Trophy defeat at Cheltenham.

Jimmy Spencer and Jeff Goulding gave the Robins a 2-0 half-time lead before Lloyd Mackin got one back.

But striker Howe, who has scored three goals in seven games since joining the Gulls in July, went off with a hamstring injury after an hour.

"We hope it's not as bad as first expected," manager Martin Ling said.

"It might just be a twinge but whenever you grab a hamstring you tend to worry about it as a manager," Ling added on BBC Radio Devon.

With Howe a doubt and new signing Billy Bodin away on Welsh Under-21 duty, Ling's options up front are limited.

Taiwo Atieno is the only fit experienced striker available after Billy Kee was sold to Burton Albion last week.

Lloyd Mackin started against Cheltenham but his goal on Tuesday was the first ever in his senior career.

Ling has options in youngsters Ray Spear and Saul Halpin while Chris McPhee could play further forward.
