Rangers have terminated the contract of big-name Ibrox flop James Beattie.

The 33-year-old former England striker made only nine appearances since joining last summer.

"A deal has been agreed with Beattie which terminates his contract and makes him a free agent," the Scottish champions announced.

"It was clear he had no future at the club under Ally McCoist and his contract was ended by mutual agreement."

The former Blackburn Rovers, Southampton, Everton and Sheffield United player was signed by previous Rangers manager Walter Smith on a two-year contract after his departure from Stoke City.

However, he was sent out on loan to Blackpool for the second half of last season and could not help prevent the Seasiders being relegated from the Premier League in England.

Beattie has not featured for Rangers this season under new manager Ally McCoist.
