Northampton Town have released midfielder Kevin Thornton after he reached the end of his short-term deal.

The 25-year-old was handed a month-by-month contract in the summer, with a view to proving his fitness.

He made two appearances this season, taking his tally to 45 games since joining the Cobblers in January 2010.

"He had to have an operation and never really got back to the level he had in pre-season," assistant boss David Lee told BBC Radio Northampton.

"He came back and did well in pre-season, his fitness was good but you know with budgets at clubs nowadays and the players we have got in that position, I think the gaffer felt he'd be best playing somewhere else."

Thornton is free to join another club because he was released before the close of the transfer deadline.
