Hartlepool United have signed former Sunderland defender Stephen Wright on a short-term deal.

Wright, 31, has been training with the club since leaving Coventry at the end of last season, and impressed Mick Wadsworth enough to earn a contract.

"His training and attitude to training has been fantastic and exemplary," Pools boss Wadsworth told BBC Tees.

"He's very good with the young players and he's added something to the training ground."

Wadsworth added: "He's a local boy, he lives in this neck of the woods and wants to stay in the North East."

The Liverpool-born defender began his career at Anfield and went onto make 21 appearances, before moving to Sunderland via loan spells at Crewe Alexandra for £3m in August 2002.

He played 105 games for the Stadium of Light club in six seasons, prior to moving to Coventry City in August 2008, where he remained until the end of last season.
