Gateshead defender Eddie Odhiambo says the club's excellent start to the Blue Square Bet Premier season is proof of positive progress this summer.
The Tyneside club are second in the table behind leaders Wrexham on goal difference, with six wins and a draw from the opening seven games.
"I'm not saying we're there yet but we're taking the right steps forward," Odhiambo told BBC Newcastle.
"Winning games gives confidence and we're improving."
The former Oxford defender added: "All we can do is improve week by week, session by session."
Odhiambo, 26, made the switch from Newport County to the North East during the summer, after stints at Oxford United, Southampton and Stevenage.
"It's been as welcoming as any club I've been to," he continued.
"In terms of the set-up I couldn't believe how good it was and how professional it was.
"I'm surprised that Gateshead haven't kicked on sooner."
