Chibuzor Chilaka's first-half strike secured Braintree's win at fellow Blue Square Bet Premier new boys Alfreton.
Chilaka slotted home from inside the area with a neat finish after good work by Ben Wright on the left-hand side.
Alfreton pressed for an equaliser after the break but Theo Streete and substitute Nathan Jarman were both denied by keeper Nathan McDonald.
Jai Reason went close to doubling the lead when his shot hit an upright.
