Stuttgart say Guinea midfielder Mamadou Bah broke his hand in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying win over Ethiopia on Sunday.
According to the Bundesliga club, Bah needs an operation after breaking the metacarpal bone in his left hand.
Team doctor Raymond Best is likely to perform the surgery on Friday, ruling the defensive midfielder out of action for about 10 days.
Bah, 23, has been beset by injury since arriving at Stuttgart last year.
He joined from French club Racing Strasbourg but has made just two Bundesliga appearances so far.
Upon his return, Bah will wear a protective cover on his hand to enable a swifter return to action.
