Motherwell defender Shaun Hutchison could be out of action for up to eight weeks with an ankle injury picked up against Celtic on Saturday.

The 20-year-old had to be replaced with Chris Humphrey in the first half after picking up the knock in the 4-0 defeat at Celtic Park.

And, following further assessment, the club believe he will be missing for between six and eight weeks.

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall had feared the worst after the game.

"The one massive negative apart from the result is that Shaun Hutchinson is on crutches," he said.

"We can't afford too many injuries. Steven Saunders is out and it looks like Shaun's could also be long term."

Hutchison had recovered from a hamstring problem to line up against Celtic but only lasted 29 minutes.

"His ankle is like a balloon and, whether it is a crack or ligaments, I don't know, but it is a massive downside," added McCall.

"It was disappointing defeat, but it is the way we bounce back now.

"We moved the ball around well but didn't really cause them any problems.

"I am sure the lads will be positive when they come back in.

"It was a sore one, but we're looking forward to three home games now."
