Chris Sharp's third goal in four games gave AFC Telford victory over Alfreton.
The hosts had the better of the first half but Alfreton goalkeeper Dan Lowson twice denied Jon Adams, while Phil Trainer headed wide from close range.
Alfreton nearly took the lead against the run of play but Josh Law's curling free-kick rebounded off the post.
Sharp grabbed the winner when he collected Andy Brown's pass and rifled home from 12 yards in a result that drops Alfreton down into 22nd place.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
AFC Telford United boss Andy Sinton told BBC Radio Shropshire:
"I'm delighted to get three points against a side who people say have made a stuttery start, but they're awkward to play against and you've got to give Alfreton credit.
"I thought second half I went for it, that was the intention.
"With tonight and Saturday's game, we're in good shape. We could be a little better but we'll get better."
Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law told BBC Radio Derby:
"It just sums the season up, the chances we had. Their keeper was on form and made some fantastic saves.
"And then we don't deal with it at the other end. It's too much of a regular occurrence.
"I thought we were the better team first half but it is the story of the season so far."
