Linfield are set to be without the services of striker Peter Thompson until the New Year.

Thompson will enter hospital this weekend and will undergo surgery on an ongoing kidney problem next week.

The 27-year-old will not be available for this weekend's game against Carrick Rangers at Windsor Park.

Blues midfielder Jamie Mulgrew has returned to training after a knee injury but is rated very doubtful for Saturday's Premiership match.

Meanwhile Glenavon captain Peter McCann has been ruled out for up to two months after suffering ankle ligament damage in Tuesday night's IRN-BRU League Cup second round tie against Coagh United.

McCann was stretchered off after only three minutes of the game at Mourneview Park.

Portadown midfielder Shane McCabe is suspended for Portadown's league trip to Crusaders on Saturday.
