Colchester United boss John Ward has said he has enquired about taking Charlton's Paul Benson on loan, but is not optimistic the move will happen.
The 31-year-old striker is currently sidelined with a broken finger.
"I enquired about him, as I enquire about a number of people," Ward told BBC Essex.
"He's out injured at the moment, I think he's had opportunities to go to other clubs but it hasn't happened. I'm not hopeful it would happen."
After joining the Addicks from Dagenham & Redbridge last August, Benson went on to score 10 times in 39 games in his debut season at The Valley.
But he has featured just three times this season and was heavily linked with a switch to Notts County before the transfer window shut.
Meanwhile, Charlton midfielder Bradley Pritchard could be out for four to six weeks after breaking his metatarsal.
