A spectacular free-kick from defender Matty Robson earned Carlisle a share of the points at Walsall.
The hosts were the better side in the first half and deservedly took the lead when Will Grigg stooped to head home Jamie Paterson's well-placed free-kick.
Liam Noble missed a great chance to equalise but failed to beat keeper James Walker from 10 yards.
But Robson stepped up to secure a point when he rifled a free-kick into the top corner from 25 yards.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Carlisle United boss Greg Abbott tells BBC Radio Cumbria:
"I thought we started slowly, the heat was a factor for both teams, but the tempo we have trained at this week certainly wasn't the tempo we started the game with.
"We found ourselves in a scrap where we couldn't get hold of the ball and pass it well enough.
"We got penned back a little bit, not through great play from Walsall but from getting the ball into areas that pushed us back and got us on the back foot."
