Newcastle have confirmed that striker Phil Airey has cut short a loan spell with Hibernian that was due to run until January.

The 19-year-old made only one appearance for the Scottish Premier League side.

He came on for the final 20 minutes of the Edinburgh side's 4-1 defeat by Kilmarnock on 14 August.

A hamstring injury hindered his chances at Easter Road and now the teenager has decided to remain with his parent club.

Garry O'Connor has been in great form this season, netting eight goals, while Hibs manager Colin Calderwood can also call on strikers Akpo Sodje, Junior Agogo and Leigh Griffiths.

Meanwhile, Hibs have sent midfielder Scott Taggart out on loan to Stranraer.
