Southport midfield duo Godfrey Poku and Alan Moogan have been praised for their role in helping the Sandgrounders climb the Blue Square Bet Premier table.

Since loan man Poku came from Luton, they have won six times in nine games.

"Godfrey and Alan Moogan are a massive bonus to have in the squad," winger Adam Carden told BBC Radio Merseyside. "Every team needs players like them."

"Poku's like Claude Makelele in there for us. He works so hard, he's strong and he's a very important player."

Southport, who have risen to 10th in the league, travel to struggling Newport on Saturday looking for a fourth straight win.

"We've just got to keep going and aim higher," added Carden. "There is no one in this league really to be scared of and, if we believe in ourselves like we have been doing, anything can happen.

"All the lads are buzzing and he extra day's training on a Monday is helping us fitness-wise.

"Everyone is in this together and I think we'll do all right this season."
