Gillingham midfielder Danny Spiller has been ruled out for three months as manager Andy Hessenthaler faces an injury crisis.
The 29-year-old, who has an ankle injury, is one of nine players on the treatment table at Priestfield.
Hessenthaler told the club website: "It looks like he is going to need surgery.
"We thought it was only going to be three weeks but he's got some complications so it looks more like 12. He is devastated."
The manager told BBC Radio Kent: "We haven't got many players. We've got a really good squad and it's been decimated.
"We've got eight outfield players training with three goalkeepers."
