The visitors went close early on with Efe Sodje seeing his header cleared off the line by Matthew Spring.
Cox broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, firing David Mooney's cross past Trevor Carson.
Bury almost equalised in the second half but Michael Jones saw his header come back off the crossbar.

Leyton Orient boss Russell Slade told BBC London 94.9:
"I'm absolutely delighted. That's what we set out to do.
"The target was to get out of the bottom four.
"We haven't done it on goal difference but it's all about our current form and performances. It wasn't a classic today but it was very, very solid."
