Chesterfield slumped to their fifth straight league defeat despite taking the lead against Hartlepool.
Leon Clarke put the home side ahead but Paul Murray equalised with a looping header from Neil Austin's cross.
The visitors went ahead with a powerful James Poole strike from 25 yards and Poole made it 3-1 after heading in Evan Horwood's cross.
Dean Holden pulled a goal back for the home side but they were unable to force an equaliser.

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"We didn't deserve anything from the game it was a very, very poor performance on our part after getting off to a really good start.
"Two very poor goals on our part again. Too many players are doing the wrong thing at this moment in time.
"I'm not one of those managers who has a go at players publicly but none of them can take credit for the game."
