Sheffield Wednesday recorded their seventh straight home victory with a routine win over Colchester.
In an open first-half Brian Wilson went close for the visitors and Gary Madine had a goal ruled out for the Owls for a foul by Chris O'Grady.
Rob Jones converted after another effort from Madine was only parried by U's keeper Ben Williams.
Chris Lines' free-kick was bundled home by Reda Johnson as the hosts comfortably held on for three points.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I thought it was our best result of the season so far. You've really had to drag yourself forward by your boot laces and get a result and credit to every one of them - they've done that.
"The desire was there for everybody to see and we managed to get the crowd into it because it was just one of those days today."
Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex:
"We got overpowered after about an hour. We'd more than held our own. We came and put on a really good first-half performance with comfort with the ball at our feet.
"In that last half an hour we had enough opportunities to get the ball under better control. We relinquished our possession of the ball a little bit too easily, which is not like us at all."
